Amateur Baseball: Cannon Falls sweeps the weekend
A day after struggling to get the offense going early, Cannon Falls broke out with a five-run first inning, and kept going from there for a 14-3, seven-inning victory over Lake City on Sunday.
Austin Jacobs got the win, pitching 4 2/3 innings and allowing all three earned runs on six walks and four hits. Carter Dombeck relieved for the final 2 1/3 innings, allowing two hits.
Blakeslee and Garrett Beach were the only two Bears with more than one hit as each produced two hits. Brock Peterson, Alex Tauer and Blakeslee each drove in two runs.
Kyle Sursely took the loss, being pulled after four innings and six runs allowed, though only two were earned as the Serpents were charged with four errors in the game.
Luke Hartzell, Jack Purvis and Ricky Herron each drove in a run for Lake City.
The Bears (4-2) will host Belle Plaine on Friday, and Northfield on Sunday while the Serpents (0-1) will welcome Dundas on Sunday.
It took a while for the bats to get going, but once Cannon Falls found its groove, there was little to stop the Bears from taking over in a 6-4 win over Hampton on Saturday.
Tied 1-1 going into the seventh inning, Cannon Falls used a double from Keith Meyers to spark a three-run inning. Brock Peterson followed Meyer's extra-base hit with a run-scoring single, and Zeke Williams coaxed a walk to put two runners on base. Brandon Voth then hit a one-out single, with Taylor Pagel driving in Peterson in the next atbat. Hunter Blakeslee made it 4-1 with a single later in the inning.
In the eighth, Meyers again doubled, then stole home. Voth picked up an RBI with Peterson scoring after walking earlier.
Meyers also got the win, pitching six innings of three-hit ball. Meyers allowed one earned run with two walks and five strikeouts. Blakeslee gave up three runs on five hits in 2 2/3 innings before Carter Dombeck came in to get the one-out save.
