Football: Goodhue drops heartbreaker to Fillmore Central

Goodhue suffered a devastating loss Tuesday night after the team thought it had won in the game’s final seconds.

Trailing 13-12 to Fillmore Central in the Section 1A playoff quarterfinals, Goodhue set up to run a bootleg pass. Tyler Schumacher rolled out and ran it into the end zone. But Schumacher was hit, the ball popped up and was caught by a Fillmore Central player.

Goodhue’s fans and players were convinced Schumacher was well into the end zone and the fifth-seeded Wildcats had taken the lead with 2.4 seconds remaining. But it was ruled a turnover and the fourth-seeded Falcons won the game.

“This was a tough one to swallow – especially for our seniors,” Goodhue Coach Tony Poncelet said. “Overall this was a great defensive battle. Both teams earned everything they got offensively.”

Fillmore Central took the first lead in the game on a 9-yard scoring pass from Bryce Whitehill to Jordan Miller with 9 minutes, 16 seconds left in the first. Collin Bennett kicked the extra point.

Goodhue answered back with a 35-yard scoring play on a pass from Schumacher to Sam McNamara with three seconds left in the first, but failed to convert on the two-point conversion run.

Neither team scored in the next two quarters of play.

Fillmore Central went ahead 13-6 with 6:46 remaining in the fourth quarter on a 7-yard scoring pass from Whitehill to Logan Masters. The extra point kick failed.

Goodhue pulled within a point just 32 seconds later when Schumacher caught a 73-yard touchdown reception from Jake Pasch. The two-point conversion pass attempt failed.

Schumacher finished as the Wildcats’ leader in passing, rushing and receiving. He passed for 86 yards on 5 of 16 attempts, rushed for 50 yards on 12 carries and also caught three passes for 93 yards.

On defense, Chuck Dahling had 15 tackles and a fumble recovery, and Austin Buck finished with 12 tackles and a sack.

Goodhue finishes the season with a 3-6 overall record while Fillmore Central (4-5) takes on top-seeded Blooming Prairie on Saturday. The Awesome Blossoms advanced with a 42-6 victory against eighth-seeded Kingsland on Tuesday.
