Girls Soccer: K-M ends PIZM's upset bid

Pine Island/Zumbrota-Mazeppa’s bid for a section title looked like a strong possibility as the Wildcats went up 1-0 on Kasson-Mantorville within the first five minutes of Saturday’s Section 1A semifinal match.

But the 10th-ranked KoMets scored five minutes later, and continued to pile up the goals on the way to clinching a spot in the section finals with a 4-1 victory.

“Both teams were playing hard and played a very good game,” said PIZM head girls soccer coach Doug Weincouff. “Kasson is a very well-coached, disciplined team. Once they got it back to 1-1, it was a battle in the middle of the field for both teams.”

It didn’t take the Wildcats long to get on the scoreboard when on a direct kick, Liza Shelquist blasted the ball into the net to make it 1-0.

K-M would make it 2-1 before halftime, and then the KoMets tacked on two goals late in the second half as PIZM tried to even the score.

“We went to five forwards trying to get more offense,” Weincouff said. “We were trying to move the ball forward, and when you do that, you take your chances, and they were able to score because of that.”

The Wildcats end the 2013 season at 10-7-1 overall.

“I am very proud of the girls,” Weincouff said. “It was the first time we played in the semifinals in the program’s history. They had a tremendous season.”
