Girls Tennis: Lake City rolls past Stewartville

In two meetings this season, Lake City and Stewartville have played each other tight, with each team getting a 4-3 victory in the season split.

But in the first round of the Section 1A playoffs Wednesday, Lake City’s players were able to win in clutch situations, helping fifth-seeded Lake City take the match over fifth-seeded Stewartville 6-1.

It started at the top for Lake City as No. 1 singles player, senior Josie Kuchinka, overcame a second-set loss to win 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 over Whitney Erickson.

In doubles, Lake City’s No. 1 duo of Lidia Wallerich and Erica Hubbard won a first-set tiebreaker, then after Stewartville’s Mackayla Olsen and Kyra Boland won the second set, Wallerich and Hubbard took command in the super tiebreaker to win 7-6 (2), 1-6, 7-2.

At No. 3 doubles, Chloe McElmury and Juli Keller won a first-set tiebreaker on the way to a 7-6 (11-9), 6-0 win over Stewartville’s Jessica Pedelty and Morgan Graff.

“Our goal was to get seven wins this season, and we were able to reach that today,” said Lake City head coach Dave Toole.

Lake City advances to the next round of the section tournament, which takes place Tuesday in Owatonna.
