Girls Tennis: Cannon Falls routs Stewartville

In the final regular-season match of the year, the Cannon Falls girls tennis team reasserted itself as the No. 3 seed in Section 1A with a 6-1 victory over Stewartville, which earned the section’s No. 4 seed.

Gabrielle Steinhoff got the Tigers’ lone victory at No. 1 singles, a 6-3, 4-6, 11-9 win over Tayler Bannit. Everything else, however, went the way of the Bombers. Maddie Adel defeated Madeline Grimm 6-0, 6-3 at No. 2 singles while Sheyenne Bauer crushed Ahna Boe 6-0, 6-1. At No. 4 singles McKenna Bauer  got past Julie Lanzel 7-5, 6-0.

At No. 1 doubles, Hannah Boman and Kaesey Glaess grinded out a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Mackayla Olson and Kyra Boland. Grace Rutter and Sarah Modrack had little problem with Emily Pearson and Emma Dwire in their No. 2 doubles match, winning 6-2, 6-1. Molly Rolfes and Bethany Nelson completed the doubles sweep with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Jessica Pedelty and Morgan Graff.

The Bombers finished the season 11-6 overall, and 6-2 in the Hiawatha Valley League. On Wednesday, Cannon Falls will face sixth-seeded New Life Academy in the first round of the Section 1A playoffs. Bombers head coach Paul Norstad expects his team to move on to Tuesday’s semifinals.

“I thought we played well today,” Norstad said. “But New Life is a scrappy team. They have some good singles players, but we should match up well against them.”
