Girls Tennis: Red Wing rattles New Prague

With two tough conference tests coming up with Northfield and Chanhassen, the Red Wing girls tennis team got its week started off right, picking up a 6-1 Missota Conference victory on the road Tuesday against New Prague.

“We’re going to be playing teams that are much stronger this week, so this was a good warm-up,” said Wingers’ head coach Matt Kavanagh. “If we play like this the rest of the way, I like our chances.”

Emily Otteson got the call at No. 1 singles and responded with a 6-1, 6-0 win against Deven Fennern. Nicole Schammel and Claire Carson won at No. 3 and 4 singles, respectively, with Schammel winning 6-1, 4-6, 6-1 and Carson taking her match 6-3, 6-1.

Led by the No. 3 duo of McKenzie Muelken and Mati Bodensteiner’s 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 3, the Wingers’ doubles picked up a sweep. The No. 1 team of Emily Stegora and Katie Carlson won their match 6-3, 6-0, and Serena Feehan and Lauren Brooks secured a win at No. 2, 6-3, 6-0.

Red Wing hosts Northfield on Wednesday, then return to Twin Bluff Middle School Thursday to face off with Chanhassen.
