Football: Gadient throws Zumbrota-Mazeppa to victory

Behind the arm of senior quarterback Kurt Gadient, Zumbrota-Mazeppa moved to 2-0 in the Southern Football Alliance White division with a 37-20 road victory over Dover-Eyota.

With 6 minutes, 50 seconds remaining in the first quarter, the Eagles got on the scoreboard first when quarterback Owen Riley found Mitch Sanders for a 31-yard touchdown reception.

Once Gadient got a chance under center, the Cougars’ signal-caller put the team on his back, starting with a 12-yard touchdown pass to Jacob Forrey with 3:57 left in the first.

Following a 21-yard field goal by Jacob Tschann early in the second, Gadient collected his second passing touchdown of the game, finding Jacob Ugland for a 20-yard strike.

Then with seconds remaining until halftime, Z-M defensive back Hunter Prodzinski grabbed an interception at the 20-yard line, then raced 80 yards down the field for a score.

After the break, Dover-Eyota got back in the end zone as Sanders scored on a 4-yard run. Shortly after, Gadient continued to excel from the air, connecting with Prodzinski for a 51-yard touchdown reception with 6:09 remaining in the third.

Then early in the fourth, Gadient threw his final touchdown of the night, connecting with Ellis Hirman for a 65-yard score. Gadient finished the night 16 of 20 passing for 334 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions. Forrey was his top target with four catches for 67 yards..

Z-M (2-1) heads to Winona Cotter next Friday.
