Girls Soccer: Red Wing, Cotter end in tie

Down 2-0 at halftime to Winona Cotter on Tuesday, the Red Wing girls soccer team had to come up with something. A change in formation, a change in strategy, anything to overcome a first half that saw the Wingers muster only two shots on goal.

It didn’t take long for Red Wing to get its bearings in the second half as the team popped in two goals within the first six minutes of the second half, resulting in a 2-2 tie in Winona.

“We had a lot of good scoring chances that half that didn’t materialize,” said Wingers’ co-head coach David Thurston.

Senior Stacey Rother put in Red Wing’s first goal at the 43rd minute to cut the Ramblers’ lead to one. Then three minutes later, Maddie Hardyman, who made her return from injury on Tuesday, put in the game-tying goal.

“We went from having two shots on net to having nine in the second half,” Thurston said. “Offensively and defensively, we were holding steady tonight.”

The most encouraging sign for Red Wing came defensively. In the second half, Cotter did not get a shot off until the 32nd minute.

Red Wing goalkeeper Serena Scanlon finished with 12 saves in the tie.
