Harrell column: Bidding farewell to Red Wing

Boyz II Men were a big part of my childhood. I can’t quite decide if that’s a good thing or not, but it’s the truth.

And as I bid adieu to the Republican Eagle, two songs by the R&B quartet come to mind: “It’s So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday” and “End of the Road.”

I kid, of course, but I am saddened to say goodbye to a place I’ve called home for the first two years while transitioning from college to “adult” life.

The people of Red Wing, Lake City, Ellsworth, Miesville, Cannon Falls, Zumbrota, Mazeppa and Goodhue made me feel welcomed from the first day. I will be forever grateful for the kind words and the honesty I received from so many of you.

Thank you to the Strusz and Kingston families, who let me get a glimpse into an important relationship, one we should all learn from.

Thank you to the Georgakas family, and James in particular, for shining the spotlight on depression and showing that it is OK not always to be OK. And then showing that sports can help heal people and success is never far away.

As a baseball guy, my mind turns to the diamond when I think of all my amazing experiences at the R-E. I will never forget covering the Wingers’ and the Aces’ runs to state tournaments, Ryan Boldt’s whirlwind summer and subsequent draft, Pat Kelly getting named Freshman All-American and Big Ten First Team and the countless hours spent chewing seeds at the Ath. I will miss Red Wing baseball.

On a similar note, I will remember Lake City football as a powerhouse, not the winless teams before I arrived. Coming from a high school that rarely sees football success, I found more impressive the turnaround and the hard work it took to get there.

Each town gave me something to file away and remember as I make my way back to the Twin Cities, excited to be closer to family and friends.

I am leaving the sports world in job title, but it will never leave me. I am a sports nut and I am proud of it.

Thank you for supporting me at the R-E. I am blessed.
