Legion Baseball: Post 54 falls in playoff opener

The Sub-state 6 playoffs started on a downer for the Red Wing Legion baseball team as sixth-seeded Post 54 was crushed in their playoff opener against Prior Lake, 11-1 in seven innings at Dundas.

Prior Lake capitalized on three Red Wing errors, putting up three runs in the third, fourth and seventh innings.

“We gave them extra outs and that’s killer,” said Post 54 head coach Justin Plein. “We’re a team that can’t give other teams extra outs in order to be competitive. We only gave up two earned runs in the game.”

Nick Vaage led Prior Lake on offense, going 4-for-4 with three RBI, a double and a solo home run in the first innings.

Post 54’s lone runs came in the fourth inning. Michael Bigelbach led off with a single, then reached second on an error. Reaching third base on a balk, Bigelbach reached home on a wild pitch.

Zach Lang was Red Wing’s top hitter, going 2-for-3 with a double Dixon Irwin went 1-for-2, and Bigelbach and Ricky Turcotte each went 1-for-3. Trey Eckstrom was charged with the loss.

Post 54 resumes playoff action at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Dundas against the loser of East Ridge and Eastview.
