Amateur Baseball: Aces' streak stopped

Few teams get on a roll like Red Wing was riding heading into Thursday’s Independence Day matchup with Miesville at the Red Wing Athletic Field.

The Aces had won 11 straight games and were 15-0 at home but between the rivals, all records and streak are thrown away.

Red Wing grabbed a lead in the first inning but the Mudhens led the final six innings en route to an 8-5 victory.

David Vogelgesang went 3-for-5 with two RBI, two runs scored and two stolen bases for Miesville (11-5), while David Olson was 2-for-4 with three RBI. Matt Van Der Bosch finished 3-for-5 with an RBI, a run scored and a stolen base. Erik Olson pitched 8 2/3 innings, giving up five runs on 12 hits and a walk to pick up the victory. He struck out five.

Aaron Johnson allowed four run on seven hits and two walks in six innings while striking out four in the loss. Five players had two hits for the Aces (19-5) as they finished with 12 hits. Adam Thygesen was 2-for-5 with an RBI, Mike Stegora went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and a stolen base and Steve Boldt finished 2-for-5 with two RBI and a stolen base.

Laffey knocked in Stegora and Boldt with two outs in the first inning for a 2-0 lead. But the Mudhens answered back immediately with two runs with two outs in the top of the second inning as Vogelgesang singled home Matt Hanse and Brad Beskau.

Miesville took its first lead in the fourth inning as Aaron Stein led off with a double, advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on a sacrifice fly by Beskau.

The Mudhens made it a 5-2 lead with one run each in the sixth and the seventh innings.

Miesville padded the lead with three runs in the ninth inning before Red Wing’s offense made a late push.

Garner led off the ninth inning with a single but Olson retired the next two hitters. Then, Thygesen, Stegora and Boldt all singled to make it an 8-5 game and force the Mudhens to make a pitching change.

Vogelgesang came in after Boldt’s two-RBI single to strike out Jimmy Bohmbach for the final out and pick up the save.

The Aces will attempt to get back on track Sunday on the road against Cannon Falls while Miesville travels to face Northfield on Sunday.
