Amateur Baseball: Aces tally CCVL win over Dundas

Back from a nine-day hiatus, the Red Wing Aces got back in the win column on Sunday with a 5-3 Classic Cannon Valley League road victory over Dundas.

Down 2-1 after three innings, Red Wing got its offense rolling in the top of the fourth, putting up three runs to go up 4-2. Zach Laffey led off the inning with a single, starting off a string of five consecutive singles by the Aces. Dave Jenson and Mike Stegora each tallied RBI singles, and Adam Thygesen drove in a run on a sacrifice fly.

The Dukes cut the deficit to 4-3 in the bottom of the fourth, but Aces' pitcher Aaron Johnson held Dundas to just one hit over the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to preserve the lead. Johnson went seven innings, striking out five in the victory. Coming in for the save in the eighth, Red Wing's Brett Gadient worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the ninth, coaxing Tyler Jones into a pop fly for the final out.

Kyle Blahnik led Red Wing's offense, going 2-for-2 with two runs. Jenson added two hits and two RBI, and Stegora was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.

Jones was Dundas' top hitter, going 3-for-4 with an RBI. Dukes' pitcher Todd Mathison went all nine innings, striking out 13 and allowing five runs in the loss.

Snapping a two-game skid, the Aces (8-3, 4-1 CCVL) heads to Northfield on Wednesday.
