Struggling with a team score of 341 in Day 1 of the Section 1AAA championship meet last Thursday, the Red Wing boys' golf team improved by 19 strokes in Day 2 Monday, finishing with a score of 322, taking sixth place with a two-day total of 663 at Bellwood Oaks Golf Club in Hastings.

"It's always a good feeling to finish strong as a team," said Wingers' senior co-captain Jack Gorman. "We all played a lot better in the front (nine). We were quite satisfied with the round."

Coming away with the section championship was Lakeville North, which put together a two-day total of 613, beating second-place Rochester Century by 13 strokes. Winona (629), Owatonna (636) and Albert Lea (657) rounded out the top five.

Taking advantage of the calm weather, Red Wing's golfers got off to a fast start, with Gorman shooting a 36 and Dylan Goggin carding a 38 after nine holes.

"I had a birdie try at almost every hole," said Gorman, who scored birdies on No. 3 and No. 6.

Taylor Hanson and Zach Sachen each carded 41s before the turn.

"The conditions were pretty good; a lot easier (than Thursday)," said Hanson, Red Wing's other co-captain. "It's nice when the wind's not 30 miles an hour."

On the back nine, things became more treacherous for Red Wing as the lowest nine-hole scores came from Hanson, Sachen and Fritz Belisle, who each shot 41 to close out the round.

Gorman shot the team's low round on Monday with a 78. Goggin had an 80, while Hanson and Sachen each finished with 82s.

"My wedges were a lot better (on Monday)," Hanson said. "I got them down pretty good."

Over the two-day tournament, Goggin led the Wingers with 165, followed by Gorman (166), Sachen (167), Hanson (168), Belisle (168), and John Wedrickas (180).

Winona's William Leaf took medalist honors with a two-day total of 141. Along with Leaf, Owatonna's Peter Jones (147), Rochester Mayo's Grant Coleman (150), Century's Chris Captain (151) and Century's CJ Fritcher (154) will represent Section 1AAA at state.

Losing just two golfers to graduation, both the senior co-captains agree that things are headed upward for the Red Wing golf team.

"It's always fun to have a lot of young guys step up," Gorman said. "The future is bright for them."

"We met, if not exceeded, our expectations," Hanson said.
