Softball: Cougars power way into 1AA-West finals

With four players belting home runs on Thursday, the Zumbrota-Mazeppa softball team advanced to the Section 1AA-West finals with an 11-3 victory over Byron in Zumbrota.

The second-seeded and top-ranked Cougars will face top-seeded and fifth-ranked Kasson-Mantorville in the sub-section finals at 2 p.m. today in Cannon Falls. The KoMets came up with a 1-0 victory in their only regular-season meeting.

Morgan Olson led Z-M with nine strikeouts in six innings pitched for the victory. She also went 2-for-4 with a double, a triple, an RBI and a run scored.

Hailey Dykes was 2-for-3 with a pair of home runs - a solo shot in the second inning and a two-run homer in the fourth. Carley Henning drilled a two-run home run in the fifth, and Lydia Wagner added a solo homer in the sixth.

"We scored at eight of the nine spots in the batting order," said Cougars' head coach Kevin Nelson. "There was good balance in our lineup."

Amber Jentsch was 2-for-4 with two RBI, while Henning added a double, two runs and three RBI.

Z-M improves to 20-1 with the victory.
