Gymnastics: Red Wing rocked by top-ranked Raiders
Northfield, the top team in Class 2A, traveled to Red Wing Friday and scored a 145.625 to win the meet at the Red Wing Area Gymnastics Center.
The Raiders scored better than a 150.000 last weekend, three points better than the next closest team, Roseville (147.867).
On Friday, the Wingers scored a 122.85.
"Before a meet like this, we really just talked about increasing our score," Red Wing head coach Megan Latch said, "being focused on what we have and what we can do. The energy in the gym tonight was great from both teams. There was a lot of excitement. It was our parent night and senior night, too."
The Wingers got a series of personal bests Friday night. They were led by junior Carlie Sandstrom, who scored a 31.775 in the all-around competition to finish in fifth place. She scored a personal-best 8.15 on the floor exercise for fifth place, and also took fifth on the balance beam with an 8.1. Senior Molly Hart had a personal best of 8.5 on the floor exercise, and senior Kaleigh Owens also put forth a personal best on the floor with a 7.95.
Red Wing's Irina Anderson, a sophomore, took fourth place on the uneven bars with a season-best 8.1 and also grabbed fifth place on the vault with an 8.65. Junior Shayna Ramstad had a personal best 6.325 on the uneven bars.
"Our last meet we struggled on bars and we saw a lot of improvement this week," Latch said.
Northfield sophomore Bailey DuPay finished with a 37.85 in the all-around competition. DuPay was first on the floor exercise (9.525), the uneven bars (9.8) and the floor exercise (9.75). Junior Abby Stets was second in the all-around with a 37.35 for the Raiders and took first on the balance beam with a score of 9.35.
The Wingers will host the Missota Conference meet Friday at Red Wing High School.
"The girls are really excited to have the opportunity to compete at the high school," Latch said. "It's one of our biggest meets of the season."
