Panthers have four wrestling in semifinals tonight

MADISON - Ellsworth High School wrestlers will be busy in the semifinal round of the WIAA State Wrestling meet at the Kohl Center Friday evening.

The Panthers advanced four wrestlers to the semifinals which begin at 7 p.m.

EHS started the day with Jens Lantz beginning his journey to be EHS's first three-time champion. His first match against senior Josh Murray (34-8) of Marshall went smoothly other than him nearly giving up a reversal which turned into an escape. But he kept from being scored upon since the Cheesehead Invitational by pinning Murray in 3:46 at 120.

Freshman Tristen Mueller continued his winning ways and in his quarterfinal match in dramatic fashion. After leading Lomira senior Alec Sauer (23-5) 4-0 in the third period, Sauer put Mueller on his back for a reversal and two-point nearfall to tie the score. But a late reversal broke the tie in Mueller's favor and he won 6-4.

EHS's Logan Kemmerer had his first state match at 152 it turned into comfortable win as well. He got major decision on Sheboygan Falls senior Brandon Broetzmann (31-14) 11-1 scoring a takedown and five points in nearfalls in the third period.

Gabe Frandsen was on the mat at the same time at 160 against West Salem/Bangor senior Alex Peters (46-6) and he was also a winner. He scored a takedown on a scramble late in the second period and got a three-point in the third for a 5-0 shutout win.

Jake Murphy tried to make it 5-for-5 for the Purple in both the semifinals and in placement but lost both his 195-pound matches Friday. Murphy was pinned by Two Rivers's junior Scott Skornicka (39-8) in 2:38 in the quarters and lost a close match to junior Zach Koch (37-11) of River Valley 5-3 in the consolation round and was eliminated from the tournament.

Tonight's semifinal match-ups have Lantz against Sparta sophomore John Roddick (40-11); Muller vs. Oconto Falls's sophomore Dewey Krueger (40-1); Kemmerer vs. River Valley's undefeated senior Seth Leigel (44-0), who is considered one of the top wrestlers in the state pound for pound and a University of Wisconsin recruit; and Frandsen faces Kewaskum senior Brett Scoles (38-3).
