Panthers second in D-2 after one day at Bi-State

LA CROSSE - Ellsworth High School's wrestling team is in second place in its own division at the Bi-State Classic tournament Friday at the La Crosse Center.

The No.3 ranked Panthers trail No. 1 Luxemburg-Casco 168.5 to 136 in Division 2. No. 1 Wausau West leads both its division and the whole meet with 215 points. The top-ranked team in Division 3, Lancaster, leads Division 3.

Ellsworth came into the meet hampered without two of its starters and would be top point-getters, Dan Langer at 138 and Logan Kemmerer at 160 due to injuries.

EHS has two wrestlers in the championship round. Jens Lantz won three matches on the day at 120 pounds. He pinned Hudson's Nick Nelson in 4:53 in the quarterfinals. Gabe Frandsen will also be wrestling in Saturday morning semifinal round after pinned Weston/Ithaca's 4:22 in the quarterfinals at 170.

The Panthers also have four other wrestler still alive in the consolation rounds. Brad Cain made it to quarterfinals at 132 until he lost his first match to Shamar Williams of Lakeville South 10-5. He will finish no worse than 12th. Also still wrestling after winning in the consolation rounds are Tristan Mueller at 138; Max Peterson at 160 and Hank Holdorf at 182. Mueller won his final match of the day 6-4 over Ben Ayres of Nekoosa/Port Edwards; Peterson edged Titus Kottke of Athens 10-9 and Holdorf defeated Max Sebranek of Hillsboro 2-0.

The Bi-State Classic will conclude Saturday with the semifinals and wrestlebacks in the morning and the placement matches in the evening.
