ELLSWORTH, Wis. - A final sprint at the end by Lucas Green helped the Ellsworth High School boys' cross country team win the Ellsworth Invitational Tuesday in its new digs at the Ellsworth Country Club.

Green, a senior, was able to use a downward slope towards the finish line to his advantage by making a final sprint which helped him pass Lake City eighth grader Carl Kozlowski and finish fourth in the meet. This allowed EHS to finish ahead of LC in the team standings 51-53.

Lake City did have the meet's individual winner. Senior Carston Damman hit the chutes in first place in 17:18 on the 5000-meter course.

Prescott's Cole Hauenstein finished second in 17:48. This was Hauenstein's first race of the season. Prescott finished sixth in the team standings out of seven schools.

PHS's also claimed a second individually in the girls' race. Senior Victoria Simones did so in 19:58, also running a 5000-meter course. Winning the race was Durand sophomore Savannah Fagerland in 19:56.

Prescott finished third in the team standings, also closely behind Amery and Osceola. Ellsworth was sixth. The Panthers' top runner was senior Kennedy Kowalchyk who was 11th in 21:32. Lake City placed fourth led by eighth place finisher Morgan Damman, a freshman, in a time of 20:57.
