Red Wing seniors Bryan Horvat and Hope Sevlie woke up Friday on the warmest day of the spring thinking it would be another routine end of the week. Were they ever in for a pleasant surprise.

BYRON, Minn. — Zumbrota-Mazeppa clinched the Hiawatha Valley League Blue Division title for the second straight season Friday with a 10-0 victory over Byron in five innings.
Red Wing’s girls track team finished seventh at the True Team section meet last year. With almost the same roster, it jumped up to claim the title last week in a narrow victory over Byron. The Wingers compete Saturday at the True Team state meet at Stillwater High School.

Winger senior Brittany Lewis has been something of a one-person show the last few years on the track team. In fact, Tiffany Harvey and Dana Hoffman — the team’s second and third best performers last year — combined to barely outdistance her point total in 2007.

Red Wing's boys tennis team received the No. 2 seed on the North side of the Section 1AA Tournament and will play host today to No. 8 Faribault.

Red Wing’s Rich “Geno” Buck (pictured) and his LongHaul Bombers teammate Denny Crine, from Las Vegas, Nev., entertained a large crowd at the Red Wing Athletic Field Friday before the Aces game. Buck and Crine, both members of the Stadium Power Tour, went head-to-head in a home run derby with Crine winning. The farthest home run was estimated at 420 feet. The Stadium Power Tour is an elite group of eight slow-pitch softball players that travel to Major League Baseball stadiums and compete against each other. Buck and Crine will compete June 19 in the Metrodome before the Twins take on the Washington Nationals. It’s one of 12 stops on the tour.

When Winger sophomore Bryant Blahnik yelled in frustration before slamming his racquet into the net after missing a shot Thursday against Hutchinson, it came as little surprise to anyone watching. Red Wing's rivalry with the Tigers has blossomed over the last two seasons to the point where every shot was hotly contested. "It's like a Duke-North Carolina game," Red Wing senior Kyle Klassen said. "We don't like each other."

The Hiawatha Valley League championship baseball game scheduled for May 17 has been canceled. The decision was made based on extensive postponements throughout the spring season. The extra game will return to the schedule next year.

Madonna, the St. Paul Saints mascot, hugs a young fan between innings Tuesday night a Jack Ruhr Field in Miesville. The Saints beat the Mudhens 12-0 in seven innings. Matt Vanderbosch connected for Miesville's only hit, but it was good enough for entire crowd as Vanderbosch was the "Beer Batter." "We just appreciate them coming down," Miesville player/manager Chris Olean said. "They're good players and we did what we could. they just showed why they were professionals."

Poor starts have plagued the Red Wing Aces over the last few years. That doesn’t seem to be the case after the opening weekend of 2008. Red Wing dispatched Bay City 10-4 on Saturday and Jimmy Bohmbach cracked a two-run, two-out single in the bottom of the ninth to send the Aces past Hastings 4-3 on Sunday.
