Letter: Funding needed to ensure homes for all
To the editor:
CommonBond Communities would like to thank Sen. Michael Googin for a thoughtful and informative meeting with staff and residents at the Maple Hills Apartments in Red Wing on April 3. During the meeting, Googin received a tour of the property, which has 96 units of affordable housing, and staff and residents discussed the need for more resources to build and preserve affordable housing.
CommonBond Communities is a nonprofit community developer that believes safe, stable housing is the foundation for everything in life. Maple Hills was our first housing community built in 1971, and as at all of our properties, we provide supportive services to help residents meet their goals and become active participants with other residents, at churches, and in communities.
We are also a member of a statewide coalition called Homes for All, which brings together over 200 organizations around the state to advance shared policy initiatives at the State Capitol. This year the coalition is asking for $140 million in bonds to support affordable housing investments across the state, including housing for seniors, veterans, and formerly homeless families.
We appreciate Goggin's support for Homes for All and look forward to continuing to discuss innovative solutions to meet the affordable housing needs in Red Wing and across Minnesota.
Lisa Wilcox-Erhardt is executive vice president of housing and services with CommonBond Communities.
