Senator's idea is reality here
Red Wing has been doing what U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar is advocating - automatically laying fiber optic conduit during road construction.
Why dig up the same road twice? Why not position your community for faster, more reliable Internet service?
As reported in Tuesday's newspaper, Klobuchar is pushing a bill that would require a state that builds a road with federal money to install broadband conduit at the same time.
Former Red Wing Public Works Director Denny Tebbe championed this idea on a local level and implemented it several years ago. The conduit - also called "dark fiber" because it's not connected yet -- is ready and waiting under several residential streets.
Red Wing residents should feel a sense of satisfaction that it didn't take an act of Congress to have this community already well on its way.
