Column: Martinson wins R-E award
When's the last time you looked closely at monthly bill that came across your kitchen table?
Plenty of people apparently assume the charges are correct and write a check, Don Martinson learned after his letter regarding city utilities appeared in the Republican Eagle. The former Red Wing School District financial officer figures 45-50 people spoke with him about the letter, which is reprinted below. He reports, "The first one said, 'Don, you won!' The next question was, 'When are they going to start the refunds?'"
Most other people said they don't understand the city bill, assume it's correct, write a check and toss the bill, he said. They're paying more attention now.
The REaders' Board awarded Martinson the Golden Quill. He did a lot of research, members noted, and helped change when and how the city raises rates.
