Letter: Don't toss out all-day kindergarten

To the Editor:

I am very proud of the Goodhue school system. Goodhue School has made great efforts to provide its students with the best education possible. It has even done this while maintaining a budget --something that other schools have had a very hard time with.

This is why I was surprised that the School Board voted against having an all-day, every-day kindergarten program for next year.

There is an astonishing improvement in the education level of my son currently in the all-day, every-day kindergarten versus his older brother when he was the same age. If Goodhue School would like to improve the test scores of its students, all-day, every-day kindergarten would be a giant step in the right direction. To build a strong workforce, sports team, or education program you start by building a strong foundation. If nothing else, implementing a compromise would give parents the option to send their children to kindergarten every day would be an improvement.

I assumed there were obstacles for funding all-day, every-day kindergarten. However, that is not the case. With funding available, I see no reason not to have kindergarten available five days a week. We have the opportunity to significantly improve our children's education. Let's not waste it.
