Editorial: Solid HPC vote

05/17/2008 12:00 AM
Soaring high: Downtown enjoys a mix of beautiful historic buildings and modern storefronts. That’s thanks to the Red Wing Heritage Preservation Commission’s hard work through the years.

Letter: Assure a president elected by the people

05/17/2008 12:00 AM
While I agree with Victoria Lampman that the Electoral College is an outdated and undemocratic means of electing the president (R-E, May 13), there is a more expeditious route than appealing to Congress to assure that the winner of the popular vote becomes president.

Letter: Model for five-day kindergarten is best

05/17/2008 12:00 AM
We would like to thank the parents and Goodhue community for the overwhelming support of our all-day, everyday kindergarten program.

Letter: Universal playground levels playing field

05/17/2008 12:00 AM
I strongly urge the County Board of Commissioners to find a way to support funding for the Universal Playground Project. This park will provide an equal playing field for all children of the area, including those with special needs.

Commentary: Speak up to save dwindling utility property taxes

05/17/2008 12:00 AM
Years ago, the utility companies struck a deal with Becker, Granite Falls, Oak Park Heights, Cohasset, Hoyt Lakes, Monticello, and Red Wing. In exchange for giving investor-owned utilities authority to build and operate power plants in their communities, the Minnesota cities were promised that the property taxes generated by the electric power plants would more than offset the nuisance of hosting the plants.

Kline’s blame games must end

05/16/2008 12:00 AM
To the Editor: John Kline is finally getting around to blaming somebody for high oil prices, and not surprisingly, it isn’t himself (R-E, May 14).

Letter: Take step toward unity and peace

05/16/2008 12:00 AM
To the Editor: The time is right to get together for a Unity Peace Walk in Red Wing. It is a time for all cultures and nationalities to walk and talk side by side so we can share our visions for the future of our community.

Column: Exchange tax exemptions for good-paying jobs

05/16/2008 12:00 AM
Should the state work to entice new businesses to expand or relocate to rural Minnesota?

Editorial: Port, apply the brakes

05/15/2008 12:00 AM
The last thing Red Wing’s western gateway needs is a ginormous concrete slab disguised as a parking lot.

Letter: Urge county to fund playground

05/15/2008 12:00 AM
To the Editor: Goodhue County Commissioners Ron Allen and Red Seifert are to be commended for supporting the universal playground project proposed for Red Wing’s Colvill Park.

Letter: Don’t circumvent budget process work

05/15/2008 12:00 AM
To the Editor: The year is 2009 and, because of a Goodhue County Board decision in 2008, budget items are no longer researched and scrutinized like they were in the past.

Column: Your photographs make us local

05/15/2008 12:00 AM
The digital age makes it easier than ever for readers to contribute photographs. That means the R-E can be more local than ever.

Letter: Respond to drug use with three Cs

05/14/2008 12:00 AM
To the Editor: Teenage abuse of alcohol and drugs is a real concern. As adults, it is our responsibility to ask questions and seek solutions that will change this pattern and lead them to make more responsible choices.

Letter: Question school quality

05/14/2008 12:00 AM
To the Editor: School boards, administrators and teachers: If students and parents, and indeed the general public were free to choose the product that public education is offering today — how many would buy the product, as is?

Column: Congress can’t let energy’s engines keep idling

05/14/2008 12:00 AM
Like most Americans, Minnesotans have had enough. As I travel around the south metro and rural southeastern part of our state, Minnesotans share with me their concerns and express growing frustration over skyrocketing costs of everyday items such as food, household products, and gasoline.

Letter: Our election system needs repair

05/13/2008 12:00 AM
To the Editor: As we try to spread democracy to Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere, it might be wise to take a serious look at our house.

Letter: Wabasha County going for broke?

05/13/2008 12:00 AM
Wabasha County gluttony comes during an economic climate when businesses are closing, energy and food prices are skyrocketing, and the housing market is stagnant.

You asked…We tracked down the answer

05/13/2008 12:00 AM
Question: Do the Goodhue County Economic Development Authority and Red Wing Port Authority work together?

Editorial: Delaying Montessori makes sense

05/10/2008 12:00 AM
Red Wing School District wisely will delay launching its Montessori program.

Letter: Red Wing must thin the deer herd

05/10/2008 12:00 AM

Letter: Playground isn’t just for Red Wing

05/10/2008 12:00 AM
Commissioner Ron Allen understands handicaps. I’m sure his stints in Iraq and Afghanistan have shown him many handicapped children.

Column: Help state work to create jobs

05/10/2008 12:00 AM
Given the recent barrage of headlines and stories forecasting a continued economic downturn, we need to take a number of steps to ensure that area businesses are not hindered by needless state regulations and have access to the tools necessary for continued job growth.

Editorial: Community must address teen drinking

05/07/2008 12:00 AM
Red Wing has a serious problem. Many of our kids first try alcohol when they’re just 12 years old. “Oh, it’s probably only a sip of dad’s beer,” you say.

Letter: Rock, paper, scissors … you win

05/07/2008 12:00 AM
To the Editor: After living under the oppression of the Bush administration for what feels like forever, Democrats find ourselves with an abundance of riches — two presidential candidates so qualified they find themselves in a tie. (I am now wearing both of their buttons on my jacket.)

News industry is alive, well

05/07/2008 12:00 AM
It is time for newspapers and their staffs to tell the other side of the story regarding our industry. This past week, we read about the decline of newspaper circulation in most of the major markets across the country. But what we didn't

Letter: Take Xcel’s lead; close incinerator

05/06/2008 12:00 AM
To the Editor: I’ve noticed that the Republican Eagle is selective in articles that allow online comment. For example, the recent article about costs associated with the municipal incinerator and bonding to float it and the general high costs associated with burning is not open for comment.

Letter: Aud’s profits made pool possible

05/06/2008 12:00 AM

Editorial: Filings off to good start

05/03/2008 12:00 AM
Soaring high: Three people filed in the first two days for the Ward 2 election. That pace — better than a candidate a day — won’t continue, of course, but citizens should feel encouraged that candidates are stepping forward early.
