Forrest Watson

Forrest Walter Watson, 89, of Red Wing, born to Walter and Edna (Bremer) Watson in Lake City, MN on Jan 21, 1928, passed away unexpectedly on Dec 20, 2017 at St. Mary's Hospital, Rochester.

Forrest graduated from Red Wing Central High School in 1946. He graduated from the University of MN where he met, then married Marion Heine on Apr 9, 1951. Their first home was in Bad Tolz, Germany where Forrest served in the U.S. Army. He and Marion then settled in Red Wing in 1953.

He purchased the Koehler Book & Stationary store and the Koehler News Agency from the Walter Koehler estate. A survivor of the pencil and paper era of retail, he retired after 32 years in 1993. He was active in the community; a member of the Chamber of Commerce and a Chamber Ambassador. He was a Lion's Club member for 54 years, serving as president in 1972. He was a lifetime member of St. John's Lutheran Church serving in many roles including church council, usher, choir member and historian.

Music played an important role in his life, he played trumpet/cornet in professional dance bands while in high school. Later he played in the Legion Marching and Stage Bands in the 1960's. He was a booking agent, promoter and mentor for many local rock bands in the late 1960's.

In his later years he thoroughly enjoyed his monthly reunion lunches with his High School classmates. He found much peace and joy in his life spending time with family and friends at his lake home.

Forrest is survived by; daughter, Mary (Ralph) Rauterkus of Red Wing; sons, David of Red Wing, and Todd (Kathryn) of Waconia; grandchildren, Jeremy, Andrew, Julie (Brandon Johnson), Mackenzie, Grace and Caroline; great-grandchildren Sheldon, Lane and Collins; brother-in-law, Merle "Bud" Heine of Red Wing. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Marion who passed away in Jan 2017, they were married for 65 years.

His family sincerely appreciates the exceptional and compassionate care provided by the staffs at Mayo Red Wing and St. Mary's Hospital over the last 36 years.

Funeral service will be 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan 3, 2018 at St. John's Lutheran Church, 425 East Ave, Red Wing with Rev. Todd Engel officiating. Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery following the service. A reception celebrating his life will follow from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the American Legion, 218 West 4th St, Red Wing.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to St. John's Lutheran Endowment Fund or the Red Wing Lion's Club (specifying LCIF).
