Three weeks and counting: Spruce up the season and your holiday decor
Christmas is less than three weeks, so the time to decorate is here. Lights, scents and sounds help to make the season to life.
Decorating may be as simple as using a Christmas tablecloth or placing a candle on the mantel. Decorating also can be as complex as lighting the exterior of a home or dramatically transforming the interior. Many area homes and businesses do some of both.
Ann Ferrin at Ferrin's Furniture in Red Wing has suggestions on "how to transform your everyday to holiday."
Step one: Remove the routine clutter.
Step two: Once you've cleaned house, so to speak, put your standard decor accents away.
Remember, your usual treasures will look that much more fresh come spring after you haven't seen them for a while.
Step three: Think "winter" and not solely Christmas. This way you can keep some of those decorations up through February.
"It doesn't all have to be Santa Clauses," she said.
Step four: Get started.
"We bring out all the pine and berries, the woodsy and the glitters," Ferrin said.
Change the look of a room with holiday pillows. Provide a little comfort and joy by draping a seasonal blanket over the sofa. Think snowy owl prints. Pus snow picks in your greenery. Go with some shimmering accents.
"A lot of it isn't the red and green anymore," Ferrins said. "It's whites and grays."
Her tip for next year: Blues and corals are starting to come back.
