Boys Soccer: Wingers drop two to close regular season
Northfield scored once in each half on its way to a 2-0 win over Red Wing on Thursday.
The Wingers had just five shots on goal, while goalie Keegan McNamee faced 18 shots, stopping 16 of them.
"They were able to control most of the game in the first half," said Red Wing head coach Tony Casci. "We wanted the guys to mark closer, and you saw that with more man-to-man defense in the second half and the game got more physical. The biggest thing, though, was they were tighter with their guy and we didn't get beat as much as we did in the first half. It was the same game plan we had against Northfield in last year's section playoffs."
Red Wing finished the regular season 2-12-1, with the Section 1A tournament scheduled for next week. The coaches' meeting to determine seeding takes place Sunday.
"We hope to be somewhere between six and 10," Casci said. "We're hoping to be in the conversation for a home game (as a top-eight seed)."
Rochester Mayo 3, Red Wing 1
Red Wing took a slim lead into halftime, but Rochester Mayo stormed back with three second-half goals for a 3-1 win over the Wingers on Tuesday.
Barrent Blaney scored for Red Wing on an assist from Macklin Maroushek. John Rothering made 15 saves in the loss.
