Volleyball: Wingers split five-set thrillers

For the second straight match, Red Wing went five sets with a Big Nine Conference foe. But on Thursday, Mankato West managed to stave off the Wingers for a five-set victory, 17-25, 25-18, 25-23, 26-28, 15-11.

Vanessa Frazier was Red Wing's top hitter with 16 kills while also accounting for 16 digs and an ace block. Madisyn Lyons had 14 kills and two ace serves to go with a team-best 26 digs. Elle Thorson helped the Wingers defensively at the net with four ace blocks, and Macy Koester facilitated the offense up with 36 set assists.

Red Wing (8-11, 3-4 Big Nine) are at the Cannon Falls invitational Saturday before hosting a pair of games next week, with Rochester Mayo Tuesday and Northfield Thursday.


Red Wing 3, Owatonna 2

With Owatonna grabbing the momentum with wins in set 3 and 4, Red Wing was able to recover in the definitive fifth set to pick up a five-set Big Nine Conference road win on Tuesday, 25-18, 25-23, 20-25, 17-25, 15-10.

Madisyn Lyons was the team leader in kills (19) and digs (42) while tying for the team lead in ace blocks (three) and ace serves (one). Vanessa Frazier came up with 13 kills and 16 digs, and Abi Deming added another 12 kills with three blocks. Macy Koester was credited with 46 set assists in the victory.
