Football: Wingers' slide continues against JM
Three lost fumbles and a 364-yard effort on the ground by Rochester John Marshall were too high of hurdles to get over for Red Wing Friday as the Wingers dropped the Big Southeast District cross-over game, 45-6, in Rochester.
The Rockets got on the board at the 4-minute, 42-second mark of the first quarter when Malik Thomas scored on a touchdown run from 2 yards out.
Early in the second quarter, the Wingers managed to cross the end zone with Mac DeSutter scoring on a 14-yard run at 7:55. That momentum was brief as 31 seconds later, JM scored again when Abdul-Hakeem Mustapha broke loose for a 49-yard run to make it 13-6, where the score would stay until halftime.
The Rockets increased their lead in the third when quarterback Kip Gronholz found Steve Bruggenthies on a 5-yard pass, followed by a 19-yard Braden Black run with 2:53 left in the quarter. JM added two fourth-quarter touchdowns, with a 15-yard Thomas run and a 1-yard Bruggenthies run.
DeSutter was Red Wing's top rusher and receiver, with 67 yards on 15 carries and two catches for 43 yards. Quarterback Marcus Walm finished 4 of 15 for 59 yards and an interception while also adding 28 yards on eight rushes. The Wingers managed just six first downs in the loss.
Mustapha was the Rockets' top rusher with 17 carries for 130 yards, followed by 92 yards on eight attempts by Thomas.
In Week 6, Red Wing (0-5) will host winless Faribault for homecoming. The Falcons lost to Rochester Mayo on Friday, 42-6.
