Cross-Country: Lake City girls second at home
In a battle of ranked Class 1A cross-country teams, the fifth-ranked Stewartville girls' team was able to thwart ninth-ranked Lake City at the Lake City Invitational Tuesday at Hok-si-la Park.
Stewartville had four top-10 finishes, including first-place runner Abby Orvis (18 minutes, 51.0 seconds) en route to 29 points, beating Lake City's 76. Austin (88), Dover-Eyota (101) and Byron (128) rounded out the top five.
Lake City had three runners finish back-to-back-to-back in McKenna Beltz (12th, 21:02.3), Julia Koplin (13th, 21:06.0) and Johannah Clementson (14th, 21:14.1). Liv Kozlowski was 18th at 21:35.8, and Brenna Nelson placed 19th at 21:42.9.
Goodhue was 12th with a score of 296. Emily Benrud (54th, 24:53.8), Abby Jonsgaard (55th, 24:54.2), Madison Bartholomew (56th, 24:58.4), Haley Evans (63rd, 26:23.7) and Rebecca Alpers (68th, 27:10.2) competed for the Wildcats.
In the boys' race, Kasson-Mantorville won with a score of 44, followed by Austin (67), Plainview-Elgin-Millville (84), La Crescent (88) and Lake City (152).
Hunter Grimm had Lake City's top time (19th, 17:49.2), followed by Ben Johnson (27th, 18:10.8), Joey Kozlowski (34th, 18:20.7), Reese Anderson (35th, 18:21.0) and Nash Nelson (37th, 18:24.9).
Goodhue had two runners in Lake City Tuesday, with Derek Alpers placing 54th (19:25.3) and Zach Smith in 78th (22:20.3).
The top boys finish came from La Crescent's Matt Steiger, who won in 15:52.8.
