Hispanic Heritage Month kicks off with a festival at Central Park noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 17. All are welcome to attend this free celebration organized by Hispanic Outreach of Goodhue County.

Folkloric dance group Mexico Lindo will get the festivities underway at noon, followed by the spirited mariachi band Centenario de Minnesota. The lively indigenous dance group Kalpulli Ketzal Coatlicue will perform next, then Rochester poet Dany Solis will share heartfelt stories of the immigrant experience.

Attendees can view handmade jewelry from Mexico, a Quinceañera party display, traditional artisan crafts, and watch demonstrations on salsa making and traditional embroidery and knitting.

Authentic Mexican and Central American food and drinks can also be purchased throughout the event. Fiesta Cancun will offer tacos and burritos, La Tapatia will have tortas and elotes, La Regia Market will feature pastries and candy, and La Mexicana Market will offer drinks.

Very traditional Mexican artisan goods will be auctioned off by Hispanic Outreach. A bilingual puppet show, cultural games and a piñata will complete this fun-filled afternoon.

Guests are encouraged to bring a lawn chair or blanket.
