Weightlifting: Red Wing duo places top 10 nationally
Libertie Ryan and William Meacham competed in the National Youth Weightlifting Championships June 23-25 in Atlanta. Both Red Wing lifters ended up in the top 10 of their respective weight classes at the conclusion of what was the largest-ever U.S. Weightlifting competition.
Ryan competed in the 63-kilogram weight class, and completed all six of her lifts, three in each discipline of snatch and clean and jerk. Ryan's lifts totaled 136 Kg (60 snatch, 76 clean and jerk), which was good for ninth place out of 33 competitors. Ryan lifted in the “B” group, but ended up ahead of some of the “A” group, which John Drewes, Red Wing's coach, called a “pleasant surprise.”
Meacham totaled a 233 (101, 132), and was also 6-for-6 for the event. Meacham, lifting in the “A” group, finished fifth out of 23 lifters.
Both lifters set Minnesota High School records in their weight class during the winter high school season.
“Neither Libertie nor Willie missed a single lift,” Drewes said. “Both of these athletes are comfortable and thrive in this type of competitive environment.”
