First Covenant Discovery Hour classes raise over $3,000 for Project Blue

Children in Discovery Hour pose with a check for a portion of the total they raised. After “Walk the Water,” donations kept pouring in. Organizers at First Covenant in Red Wing said the lessons learned throughout the year and the response to the call for donations exceeded expectations.

Children in Discovery Hour classes from First Covenant Church in Red Wing raised $3,109.07 for "Project Blue." The project was launched in 2015 in partnership with Covenant World Relief and strives to provide clean water and sanitation throughout the world by raising awareness.

Throughout the year, children participated in hands-on lessons to become aware of what some children and their families must endure to obtain clean water.

The class learned how their donation could help purchase things like sand and water filters, sanitary toilets and new wells in places like India, Ethiopia, Haiti and the United States.

On May 20 children sought sponsors for the "Walk the Water" one-mile walk, which simulated what children around the world must do to obtain water for daily activities such as cooking, cleaning, drinking, and bathing. Although it was a cold, rainy day, the children and their families endured the elements to walk a mile, fill their containers, and walk back to the church.
