Hwy 61 to officially re-open, celebration planned
After two summers of construction, Highway 61 will be officially re-opening Tuesday, Aug. 23.
"The final striping is being done this week, along with barricade removals and then Highway 61 is officially finished and open," said Patty Brown, Red Wing Area Chamber of Commerce president, in an emailed statement. "Trees will be planted in September and amenities such as bike racks, benches and planters will be installed in the fall and spring, which may require some temporary traffic control."
A gathering is planned on Tuesday, Aug. 23 at 12:45 p.m. at LaGrange Park by Red Wing Shoe Corporate Headquarters. "We are going to get everybody ready there and then the police are going to close Highway 61 at 1 p.m. for a very brief time, while we all go out on the new highway for a very quick picture and video. We’ll try for pictures of everyone throwing hard hats up in the air," Brown said. "We’re inviting all businesses, residents and anyone else that wants to join us. We’re hoping for a big group and we’re hoping to have some fun with this!"
The last public construction weekly meeting will be held Tuesday at 12 p.m. at City Hall.
