Amateur Baseball: Mudhens take state opener
Opening the Class B state tournament against the Monticello Polecats, second-ranked Miesville jumped out to a 3-1 first inning lead before pulling away with a 13-3 victory Sunday at Optimist Baseball Park in Litchfield.
Going off for 15 hits, the Mudhens’ Brian Sprout led the offense, going 4-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored, and Matt Van Der Bosch hit a three-run home run. Charles Bruchu, Deryk Marks and Andrew Werner each finished with two hits, and Spencer Merle was 1-for-2 with a pair of RBI.
Monticello did itself no favors by committing six errors on the day.
On the mound, Jacob Dickmeyer got the victory for Miesville after striking out three while allowing eight hits, three runs and a walk over seven innings. Steve Maher threw a scoreless eighth inning with two strikeouts.
Only one Polecat, Tanner Eckhart, had more than one hit, going 2-for-4. Greg Holker and Joe Tupy each belted a double in the loss, and Keenan Macek hit a home run for Monticello.
On Fridley in Hutchinson, Miesville will face off with the fifth-ranked Chaska Cubs, which advanced in the state tournament with a 4-0 win Sunday against the Rochester Royals.
