Nuclear drill set for Tuesday at Prairie Island

An emergency preparedness drill Tuesday will test the capability of federal, state and local agencies in an event there is an incident at the Prairie Island nuclear plant, the Minnesota Department of Public Safety announced Monday.

Residents should not be alarmed, authorities said.

Several field activities will take place in and around the plant, including spots in Dakota, Goodhue and Pierce counties. Participants will represent those three counties, the Prairie Island Indian Community, city of Red Wing, Federal Emergency Management Agency, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and various departments within Minnesota and Wisconsin state governments.

"In the unlikely event of a nuclear generating plant incident, emergency responders, state officials and plant operators will work together for an efficient and effective response," the Department of Public Safety press release said.

The nature of the drill was not specified.
