Lenten worship is at First Presbyterian

Churches Around the Park are taking turns hosting services during Lent. On Feb. 24 at 5 p.m. worship will be at First Presbyterian Church with Pastor Tristan English of Christ Episcopal Church preaching. Supper will follow the service.

The 6:30 p.m. service will be held at First Lutheran Church.

St. Joe’s will serve meal at Methodist Church

The Community Meal/Sunday Supper will be served at 5 p.m. Feb. 21 at First United Methodist Church.

St. Joseph Catholic Church will serve the meal, which is free and open to all.

Olone begins mission

Joppa Olone, 19, Red Wing, volunteered for a two-year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Currently he is at the Missionary Training Center in Provo, Utah, and after a short time there, he will serve in the California Oakland San Francisco Mission.

Born in Ethiopia, Olone spent time in a refugee camp in Kenya. He joined the church after moving to America. During his senior year at Red Wing High School he lived with the Bryan and Lisa Banks family, graduating in 2015. He was on the soccer team and ran track.

“I will gain a lot of experiences from a mission to do better in life, learn a lot and gain knowledge.” Olone said.

After his mission of teaching and service, he plans to try out for a soccer team and attend college at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah.

UU Society recalls Harrison’s spirituality

Universal Unitarian Society of River Falls will present “George Harrison Songs” at 10:30 a.m. Sunday Feb. 21. David Lauth and Alan Ware of the Universal Rock Band will sing five songs of George Harrison in honor of the late rock start’s 73rd birthday on Feb. 25.

The accompanying talk by the Rev. Ted Tollefson will be “Oceans of Light: the Spiritual Legacy of the American Transcendentalists.” Like Harrison, Emerson and Thoreau drew inspiration from the Hindu religion and philosophy.
