People walk for unity, peace
A Unity Peace Walk took place May 18 in Red Wing. The purpose was to bring representation of the diverse nationalities and cultures together and create an awareness of the effects of drugs and violence in Red Wing. Approximately 150 people joined in the walk.
In the mid-1990s. former Red Wing Mayor Romeo Cyr and Winfred Red Cloud, in memory of Dave White. once walked 11 miles from Prairie Island to Central Park. At that time, it was important to foster the relationship with the two communities and bring awareness to drug and alcohol problems.
The 2008 participants met at Twin Bluff Middle School. Prairie Island spiritual leader Ray Owen gave a blessing before people left for Central Park.
Minnesota Correctional Facility residents recited peace poems. Claudia Bonne, Adriana Darula and Adriana Thuerauf performed a Mexican dance.
Art Owen, also of Prairie Island, then spoke. Several Prairie Island youths, along with the MCF residents, sang and drummed Native American songs under the direction of Red Cloud.
