Prescott community members met earlier this week to discuss the upcoming work on the St. Croix River/Highway 10 bridge linking Prescott to Point Douglas, Minn. Minnesota Department of Transportation and Wisconsin Department of Transportation both share ownership of the bridge, with both entities splitting the costs on repairs.

"The surprising thing is, it's actually in pretty good shape," said Matthew Pfeifer, northwest region project manager of Wisconsin Department of Transportation.

With a plan to begin work next fall, the order of work is not entirely decided yet. MnDOT and WisDOT both share ownership of the bridge, but split the cost for every other project. Pfeifer noted during the meeting that funding for this project has been covered by WisDOT.

During the meeting, WisDOT staff discussed three main items of proposed work for the upcoming project; a thin polymer overlay on the concrete deck, expansion joint replacement on the east side of the bridge and concrete repairs to the east abutment backwall.

Other work includes:

• Concrete repairs to the lift span counterweights and counterweight pit floor

• Install stainless steel flashing to prevent damage to counterweight concrete

• Seal cracks in counterweight pit walls

• Clean and paint severely corroded components

The idea, Pfeifer said, is to save the money now and do what needs to be done.

The bridge is scheduled to remain open during the repairs next year. Traffic control will navigate motorists around any lane closures. The path below the bridge will close during construction. More information and updates will be made available on the WisDOT page once construction is scheduled.
