'Learning about history inspires curiosity'
With her love for history and education, the new opening at the Goodhue County Historical Society was a perfect fit for Lindsey Rindo. But what really attracted Rindo was Bluffs & Brews, an adult program series that connects residents to cultural and natural history.
"I think this demonstrates that this institution is willing to take risks and really engage everyone," Rindo said.
The previous outreach coordinator, James Clinton, implemented the program in 2015 with the Red Wing Environmental Learning Center. Guests had enjoyed paddling and biking, plus the Cabin Fever edition with cross-country skiing or snow-shoeing through the Cannon River Bottoms and meeting up afterward at Marie's Underground for happy hour and a door prize drawing donated by Vasque Footwear.
"I love the variety of programs that James set up," Rindo said.
Along with Bluffs & Brews, the History Center hosts other events each month, such as
• History Break, a lunchtime program the third Wednesday
• Walk into Local History, seasonal walking tours
• Free Family Fun Day, the first weekend
While there may be big shoes to fill, Rindo is excited to get to work.
"Learning about history helps inspire curiosity and to grow other skill sets, like critical thinking and problem-solving," she said.
Continuing to encourage community members to make connections that they normally wouldn't, Rindo said, helps engage them in ways that might surprise them and inspire further interest in local history.
Moving forward, she wants to push the historical society's outreach county-wide.
"I'm really excited to engage with the community in all of those formats and to grow our volunteer program and make it a nurturing and mutually beneficial experience," Rindo said. "And, to get more into other areas of Goodhue County to continue to make this institution a community asset."
