Controlled burns on Sorin's Bluff planned for Wednesday
The Conservation Corps of Minnesota in cooperation with the city of Red Wing will conduct a controlled, prescribed burn of select native prairie Wednesday, March 22, on Sorin's Bluff/Memorial Park.
The purpose of a controlled, prescribed burn is to reduce invasive species in select areas and to stimulate existing prairie plants, officials said. Prescribed burns are an important step of a long range management plan to preserve and enhance the native and restored prairie.
The schedule is dependent on weather and wind conditions, but burn likely will begin around 11 a.m. and be completed by 4 p.m. Fire and smoke will be noticeable from great distances due to the blufftop prairie locations.
Memorial Park will be open and available for public use — however, residents and visitors are encouraged to avoid the burn area while the prescribed burn is taking place and while burn crew members are on the scene.
