Kocina and Tix round out ticket
Six Red Wing residents will vie for the open mayor position in a special election June 11.
Dan Bender, Ernest Stone, John Sachen, Christopher Nelson, Elizabeth Kocina and Samantha Tix filed as mayoral candidates with the city by the Tuesday 5 p.m. deadline.
Kocina, 1078 Cottonwood Ave., and Tix, 3309 South Service Drive, were the last to file, signing up Monday.
Tix, a homemaker involved in local organizations, said she would focus on keeping taxes low, public safety strong and spending wisely.
"I know the residents very well," Tix said of Red Wing.
She also said she would work at "restoring trust in local government" if elected. She cited recent City Council discussions as an example.
"I would have encouraged a public dialogue that included all the potential repercussions of closing the Mississippi National Golf Links," she said of a meeting where members did not hear an updated proposal from Red Wing Municipal Golf Corporation.
Repeated attempts Tuesday to contact Kocina were unsuccessful.
No primary is required for special elections, even when more than two candidates file, so all names will be on the ballot June 11. The person elected then will serve out the rest of former Mayor Dennis Egan's term, which ends January 2017.
Egan officially stepped down effective April 1. His resignation came after concerns about a conflict of interest were raised when he took a position with the Minnesota Industrial Sand Council. Egan first was elected in a 2011 special election after former mayor John Howe became a state senator.
Filing for the upcoming mayoral election opened April 2 and ran through 5 p.m. April 16.
