Willard Bremer, former Lake City mayor, dies at 80
Former Lake City Mayor and City Council member Willard Bremer died Thursday at Lake City Medical Center. He was 80.
Bremer's four-year tenure as mayor was a time of great transition for the city, according to former Mayor Katie Himanga, who preceded Bremer after his retirement in 2004.
During that time, she said, he assisted in the development of a new planning department, oversaw the hiring of a new city administrator, and advocated for the retention of the Federal-Mogul automotive supply plant, a large Lake City employer.
"He worked hard as the mayor," she said. "He cared a lot about Lake City."
Longtime deputy city clerk Rojean Becker said she worked closely with Bremer in all 10 years of his involvement with the city. She said he was well respected for his knowledge of politics and his fairness as a public official. He was also a good friend, she said.
"I will truly miss him," Becker said.
The funeral service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Lake City. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Monday and one hour prior to the service.
