Norovirus confirmed at Camp Pepin

The Minnesota Department of Health confirmed that it was the norovirus that sickened about 30 students at Camp Pepin last week, Red Wing Family YMCA Executive Director Mike Melstad said.

The Y owns and operates the camp between Stockholm and Pepin.

A stool sample that the MDH collected from an infected child confirmed the intestinal bug.

"That confirms it came with the kids," Melstad said, adding that the virus did not originate at the camp.

A child threw up shortly after arriving at the camp May 13. Staff didn't think much of it until a couple dozen students and a staff member became sick May 14. More students were ill by May 16.

Camp staff and professional cleaners sanitized the entire camp four times.

Melstad said the camp was back to normal as of Thursday.
