Pending legal action prompts meeting closure

Goodhue County received a charge this week from the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission alleging discrimination, said the county employee who claims she filed it last week.

Goodhue County Attorney Steve Betcher was not available for comment Friday and Assistant County Attorney Carol Lee declined to confirm if the county received a charge.

The parties and any details are confidential in the EEOC process.

The EEOC enforces federal laws that protect employees and job applicants from discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability or genetic information, according to the agency’s website.

When someone files a charge with the EEOC, a copy must be sent to the employer within 10 days. The agency says it then will conduct an investigation; or, if agreed to by both parties, settle the complaint through a mediator.

If an investigation finds an employer violated a discrimination law, the agency says cases are forwarded to EEOC legal staff to decide if a lawsuit will be filed.

Goodhue County Board is scheduled to meet in closed session May 6 to discuss pending civil legal action, the details of which are confidential under attorney-client privilege.
