Two file for mayor

The filing period for candidates for the recently vacated Red Wing mayor position officially opened Tuesday morning, and so far, two people have filed.

Dan Bender and Ernest W. Stone have turned in affidavits of candidacy, City Clerk Kathy Johnson said.

Bender, 1729 Red Fox Drive, was the first to file Tuesday morning.

"I just wanted to make sure that people knew I was running and get my name out there," he said.

Bender, 64, served on the Red Wing City Council for one term, which expired at the end of 2012. He did not seek re-election. Bender said he first considered running for mayor when he heard that former Mayor Dennis Egan would be resigning.

"I am running to support my special interest: the people of Red Wing," Bender said.

Ernest W. Stone, 647 21st St., also filed Tuesday. Multiple attempts were made to reach Stone by phone Tuesday afternoon, but the line was busy, and he could not be reached for comment before press time.

Egan officially resigned as of April 1. His resignation came after concerns about a conflict of interest were raised when he took a position with the Minnesota Industrial Sand Council.

Filing is open at Red Wing City Hall until 5 p.m. April 16. The special election will be June 11.
