Nelson joins growing race for Red Wing mayor

Christopher L. Nelson became the fourth person to enter the mayoral race when he turned in his affidavit of candidacy late Tuesday afternoon.

Nelson, 109 Finrud Ave., said he wants to see "what I can do for the city.

"This was an opportunity that I couldn't miss. ... As a young person, I should be more involved in politics," Nelson, 30, said.

Nelson moved to Red Wing in 2006. He grew up in Owatonna, Minn., and then earned a degree in law enforcement from the Alexandria Technical and Community College.

Nelson also spent nine years in the Army Reserves as a combat engineer. He has been deployed twice; he served in Afghanistan from May 2004 to May 2005 and in Iraq, Kuwait and Afghanistan in 2010.

Nelson currently works at Prairie Island nuclear plant as a security officer.

Nelson will join other mayoral candidates John Sachen, Ernest Stone and Dan Bender on the ballot.

Filing is open through 5 p.m. April 16. The special election to fill the position vacated by Dennis Egan will be June 11.
