Ellsworth High School senior Alexandra Georgakas does not back down from a challenge. They only motivate her.
Case in point, when the longtime volleyball player lost her starting spot on the team to a freshman, she knew it was time to step it up.
"I had to work hard and show that I deserved the spot," Georgakas said, adding that accomplishing her goal is one of the top highlights of her high school career.
The class of 2017 graduate will carry that driven attitude to the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire in the fall, where she plans to study psychology with the intent of one day becoming a mental health counselor.
Georgakas said her professional ambitions are inspired by hurdles she has overcome in her life, and wanting to provide others the kind of the help she received.
Her determination matches up well with the class motto, a Reggie Leach quote that goes:
"Success is not the result of spontaneous combustion. You must set yourself on fire."
Georgakas likely has several years of school ahead of her, as she also plans to go on to complete a master's degree; but, she already got a head start in her senior year with AP classes in statistics, literature and psychology.
Sor far it has been a slow realization to be done with high school, Georgakas said in the first week after her May 26 graduation ceremony.
Looking back, Georgakas said she enjoyed her time living and going to school in Ellsworth.
"It was a good school and it was fun growing up here," she said. "The teachers are all really nice and cared about the kids."
Georgakas said she is open to going wherever her career path takes her, even if it means leaving her hometown. Though for now she plans to spend the summer at home working and spending time with friends.
