Gifted education update

Gifted and talented coordinator Brian Cashman laid the groundwork for moving forward with gifted programming Monday night.

Cashman presented the Red Wing School Board with one document, which lays out the programming in a transparent, informative way.

“This, as a base, points us in the right direction,” he said.

Cashman said this year procedures were updated and aligned and he continues to work on adding enrichment opportunities and refining teacher effectiveness.

Starting in the 2014-15 school year, Cashman said he would like a new department name, a redefined purpose and mission as well as targeted professional development. In 2015-16 is the goal for implementing the total school cluster model for gifted programming.

“By putting out this framework it keeps it on the radar,” Cashman said.

Cooks’ Association agreement approved

The master agreement between Red Wing Public Schools and Red Wing Cook’s Association for 2013 through 2015 passed 6-0 at Monday’s meeting. Board member Steve Anderson abstained because of a potential conflict of interest; his wife is a district cook.

Supt. Karsten Anderson highlighted some of the changes to the agreement which include a 2 percent cost of living adjustment each year, increased options for payments throughout the year, changes to short-term unpaid leave and extended leave of absence to match teachers, and the elimination of a potentially discriminatory required retirement age.

Board sets terms and conditions of employment

District directors, program supervisors, non-classified personnel and program assistants will see changes to their terms and conditions of employment starting in the fall.

All will see an adjusted cost of living of at least 2 percent and change in bereavement to match teachers.

District directors now need eight years of service to receive retiree benefits, down from 10.

The motion passed 7-0.

Board revokes policies

Following little discussion, the board unanimously voted to revoke policies 614 and 615 due to the elimination of basic skills testing and GRAD testing. Policy 614 dealt with the district’s testing plan and procedure and 615 dealt with GRAD testing for students.

Technology pilot

Director of Teaching and Learning Joe Jezierski and Kevin Johnson, who oversees technology and grounds, gave the board their report after a year-long technology pilot. The pilot had teachers across the district test the integration of different devices into the classroom.

Personnel changes OK’d New hire: Tom Wentzler, band teacher at Twin Bluff Middle School and Red Wing High School, effective 2014-15 school year (due to a retirement); Caitlin Storm, band/music teacher at TBMS, effective 2014-15 school year (due to a retirement); Brian Stricker, sixth-grade teacher at TBMS, effective 2014-15 school year (due to a retirement).

Reassignment: Heather Finholm, math teacher at TBMS, effective 2014-15 school year.

Resignation: Terri Stegora, Title I education assistant at Sunnyside Elementary School, effective June 5; Sarah Sutton, education assistant at Sunnyside Elementary School, effective June 5; Susan Horvat, English teacher at RWHS, effective June 6; Angie DiNatale, head cook at RWHS, effective June 16; Cynthia Hemsworth, head custodian at Colvill Family Center, no date listed.

Termination: Anne Barlass, Title I education assistant at Burnside Elementary School, effective June 5.

In other news …

Concluding business from June, the board voted to place Courtney Snyder and Rachel Sager on unrequested leave of absence after neither exercised their right to a hearing before the School Board.

As part of the consent agenda the board also approved three overnight trips for FFA National Convention Oct. 28 to Nov. 2, the FFA Winter Retreat Jan. 9-11 and the FFA state convention April 26-28.

The board also approved overnight trips for the Student Council Forum and a girls basketball tournament in Rochester.

Meeting watch

Monday’s meeting lasted approximately two hours before the board moved to a closed session to discuss the superintendent evaluation. No business was conducted after the closed session.

The next meeting is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. July 21 at City Hall.
