High school readies to ramp up education

Beginning in the fall, Red Wing High School will participate in a program initiated by the University of Minnesota to help prepare students for life after graduation.

Ramp-Up to Readiness, a schoolwide guidance program, was designed between 2008 and 2012 and based on scholarly research along with engagement in Minnesota’s secondary schools.

The program comprises five pillars: academic readiness, admissions readiness, career readiness, financial readiness and personal/social readiness, said RWHS Principal Beth Borgen at Monday’s School Board meeting.

“So truly, Ramp-Up offers these five pillars of readiness to say it’s not one thing, it’s all of these things that students have to have to be ready to go on to college,” she said.

Focus on grades 8-12

Ramp-Up to Readiness is designed for grades 6 through 12 and Red Wing will focus on grades 8 through 12 to start. Throughout the year, 28 advisory activities – about 30 minutes each – and five hourlong workshops will make up this new approach to preparing students for the future.

The guidelines for the activities and workshops are based on state testing along with new legislative requirements.

Borgen said she is excited to begin the program in the fall and the school district is glad to have Every Hand Joined as a part of its implementation.

“The community wants to be a part of all students’ success,” she said. “It’s a perfect, perfect marriage.”

Chair Heidi Jones said she likes that Ramp-Up to Readiness stresses students’ strong points and it’s a good opportunity to build their knowledge and connections to many different areas of education.

“It’s got a lot of potential and I’m hoping we get there,” she said.
